Cervical Collar Types

Often used in the emergency room to treat head injuries, cervical collars are a type of medical equipment that protects the patient's neck. This device is molded to fit the patient's neck, and immobilizes the spine in order to facilitate healing. They are commonly worn for short periods of time, though long-term use may cause ligament atrophy and muscle deterioration.

There are several different types of cervical collars, and they all have their own benefits. Soft collars are designed to reduce pain, while rigid collars provide support for the cervical spine. Both collars are made from foam or stockinet and are designed to limit movement in the neck.

A soft collar is made with a foam stockinet that has a Velcro strap for support. This type of collar is best suited for minor neck and head injuries, but they can also be used to help relieve pain in more serious cases. A rigid collar is the most restrictive, and it is used for long periods of time. It can be removed for daily washing.

A soft collar is also a more affordable option. Despite its lower cost, however, it can be more prone to breakage. Patients can feel anxious wearing it, and may even feel claustrophobic. The risk of breakage can be increased in cases where the patient's airway is not properly managed.

Rigid cervical collars are also available, but they are more restrictive than soft collars. They are constructed in two pieces, with a padded liner that is removable. A collar's construction will vary based on its purpose and its size. The most rigid cervical collars are made of hard plastic that extends from the jaw to the collarbone.

A Philadelphia collar is a two-piece collar, with a chin rest in the middle. It is also contoured to ensure comfort. Its holes are small enough to allow anterior neck access for surgery.

Another type of collar, the Thomas-type, is a bit more rigid, and is made of vinyl plastic. It has small ventilation holes. It is a good choice for patients with respiratory function loss or those with a cervical spinal injury.

While they can be helpful in preventing whiplash, they are not always effective in preventing other neck injuries. In addition, long-term use of a rigid collar can cause ligament deterioration and muscle atrophy. It can also be difficult to determine how much pressure is actually being placed on the spinal cord.

While both rigid and soft collars are used for temporary or permanent support, the soft collar is usually recommended by physicians. It is less restrictive than a rigid cervical collar, but it can be worn for longer periods of time. It can help alleviate pain and may also be useful in promoting healing.

The Philadelphia collar is the most frequently prescribed type of cervical collar. It is a two-piece collar with a hole in the middle for tracheostomy purposes. The collar can also be used with a chest extension piece.
